10.674 Technology Marketing Unit FEDERAL AGENCY: FOREST SERVICE, DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE AUTHORIZATION: Rural Revitalization Through Forestry, National Forest Dependent rural Communities, 1990, 7 U.S.C., Chapter 95, as amended, and Interior Appropriations Act of 2003.
To assist small forest products businesses, community leaders, entrepreneurs, non-profits, and others turn small diameter and underutilized wood species into marketable forest products, including biomass energy. Programs may include: (1) technical assistance for processing and manufacturing of small diameter or low valued hardwoods and softwoods; (2) prototype development of potential new products; (3) demonstration projects that showcase innovative uses for small diameter and low-valued hardwoods and softwoods; (4) economic feasibility assessments related to using small diameter and low-valued hardwoods and softwoods; and (5) market assessments for using small diameter and low-valued hardwoods and softwoods. USES AND USE RESTRICTIONS: Uses are restricted to small forest products businesses, community leaders, non-profits and others that are trying to develop new markets and uses for small diameter and underutilized hardwood and softwood species. ELIGIBILITY

EXAMPLES OF FUNDED PROJECTS: South Central Mountain RC&D Council, Mountainair, NM: In June 2002, a $50,000 grant awarded to help a local minority owned business develop markets for wood/plastic composite signs that use juniper as the substrate. Bitterroot RC&D Council, Hamilton, MT: In August 2002, a $48,900 grant was awarded to determine the feasibility of converting a school system from #3 fuel oil to biomass heat. Biomass heat would come from fuel reduction treatment activities in surrounding area. Phillips Farm Advisory Committee, Moscow, ID: In June 2003, a $19,950 grant was awarded to built a park kiosk that would be made from small diameter ponderosa pine. Cheyenne Log Homes, Inc, Eagar, AZ: In June of 2003, a $50,000 grant was awarded to help them develop products for the log home market that are made from small diameter trees that are removed from fuel reduction activities in the surrounding area. CRITERIA FOR SELECTING PROPOSALS: Grants are approved on a the basis of a nationwide review and are based on merit of project as evaluated by a panel of experts and peers.
